Arnolfo di Cambio, original architect of the Florence duomo, died in 1302, and so leadership of the project passed on to Giotto, with the help of Andrea Pisano. Giotto’s name lives on to this day in the church’s bell tower, which is known as Giotto’s Campanile ⚜️
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria dei Fiore is built on the site of what was the city’s second cathedral, dedicated to Saint Reparata. The City Council of Florence then decided to commission Arnolfo di Cambio, architect of the Palazzo Vecchio and Basilica di Santa Croce, to create a new church for the city in 1294. It wasn’t until 1436 that it was finally completed ⚜️
Hope this Monday is treating you kindly 🤍 Sharing a new post on the blog today, link in bio!
Happy Sunday!
Are you team Giuliano or team Lorenzo?
If you look at my feed, I think my obsession with ceilings and domes in particular is beginning to become apparent. Can you blame me, though?

Hello!

My name is Jessica and I live in Madrid, Spain. I’m obsessed with dogs (this is important) and have a tendency to take way too many pictures when I travel (which doesn’t happen often enough). I like cold weather, morning light, and empty museums.
