So. Many. Bodies

Cimitero Monumentale di Torino
Previously known as the “General Cemetery,” the Monumental Cemetery of Turin is the largest graveyard in the city, and one of the largest in the whole of Italy.

It is termed “monumental” due to the large number of sculptures and porticoes that populate it, giving it a high artistic value.

It was first constructed in 1827 as an alternative to the existing Cemeteries of San Lazzaro and San Pietro in Vincoli. The project had numerous investors, and the cemetery finally opened in 1829, when the first bodies were interred.

The property has been expanded a whooping eight times and it serves as the resting place of over 400,000 people.
