Word on the Water
This is one of the cutest bookshops I’ve ever seen. First established in 2011, it is housed in a Dutch canal boat called Dianti, which dates back to the 1920s.

At the beginning, the bookshop was forced to move around up and down the canals, which wasn’t a very effective way to run a business, as people would never know where to find them. As of 2015, however, the bookshop now has a permanent mooring license that allows them to remain at one location on Regent’s Canal, near Granary Square.

British Library
Considered to be one of the largest libraries in the world (surpassed only by the Library of Congress), the British Library was established in 1973 as an independent institution. Previously, the library had been part of the British Museum (much like the Natural History Museum).

Some of the British Library’s collection is on shown to the public in a display known as “Treasures of the British Library.” It includes a wide variety of documents, spanning everything from illustrated manuscripts, to Beatles lyrics, and sketches of poems by Sylvia Plath.

Upon its establishment, the British Library received the book collections from the British Museum, as well as that of other institutions which were promptly closed, including the National Central Library, the National Lending Library for Science and Technology, and the British National Bibliography.

Over the following years, it absorbed the collections of other institutions, eventually reaching its current holdings, which include between 170 and 200 million items. The library has been housed in various locations over the years, until its current building was completed in 1998.
